“It’s So Easy and Other Lies” is the inspiring story of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Duff McKagan. This autobiography was originally released as a hardcover in 2011 and now a paperback in 2012 by Touchstone, a division of Simon and Schuster Inc.
What we as the reader have been given here is a tale of one man’s journey through life and discovering what is truly important in it. These walk through takes us from Duff McKagan’s roots in Seattle, the tumultuous years in Guns and Roses, the rebuilding in Velvet Revolver and contentment in Loaded. With each step are the honest ups and downs that the writer openly admits that he has not only put himself through but member of family that are the most important to him.
Duff McKagan’s self reflection on the life he has lived is what makes this memoir as enjoyable as he does not pull any punches on the life that he has lived. Through each page, there is not one time that he blames anyone for the pitfalls that Duff McKagan put himself through. Unlike so many of us, the author lays the blame squarely on his shoulders for the abuses that Duff McKagan put himself through.
To this reviewer there are two defining moments in this book.
The first moment is in the beginning where the author is at his child’s birthday party to only stumble upon kids kissing and his reaction to it. The reader cannot help but smile as this makes Duff McKagan relatable to you. The moment described is every father’s worry and nightmare.
The second moment is a recounting of finances and statements that are not able to be understood and Duff McKagan decided to continue his education to fully understand what each line meant and starting to take his life back and controlling it.
“It’s So Easy and Other Lies” by Duff McKagan is a recommended read for anyone as with each page the author gives the complete story to the best of his memory in a way that you feel that it is being shared over a cup of coffee.
