Discover: The Ty Curtis Band – Cross That Line

Ty Curtis

This reviewer likes to have friends come up to him and use the phrase, “You need to hear this …” It is such an incredible way about finding new music and sharing it with everyone else. This month that is actually what has happened as we discover the music of The Ty Curtis Band and the release “Cross That Line” that was released to us in 2010.

The Ty Curtis Band brings us a fusion of blues based music that has a tremendous amount of energy to it as the track that gives an ode to a lady to watch out for “Bad News” shows us. This synergy is given to us on many levels as evident in “What He Doesn’t Know”, “Low Down Broken and Blue” and “Fool’s Game”. All of the high tempo tracks will get you toe tapping or dancing through whatever room you are in.

While Ty Curtis’ guitar playing brings you to your feet on each track, it is the slower songs that highlight his vocals and the honesty behind him. The listener can feel the sincerity and honesty in his voice when they hear “Tell Me”, “Five Long Years” and the extremely tender, “I Want You With Me”.

Many themes are explored in this collection such as love, trust, honesty and tales of the road. They are all told with the storyteller’s muse and you, the listener, truly believe that Ty Curtis has lived each word.

Though this is named after Ty Curtis, there is band interaction happening throughout this recording with the drummer Davis Brown, Hank Shreve on harmonica, keyboards and vocals and bassist Willy Barber. Each member adding to the sound and music in this collection of songs.

The Ty Curtis Band and the recording “Cross The Line” is highly recommended for everyone who wishes to discover this young 2009 International Blues Challenge Runner Up who plays like an elderly bluesman that has been riding the rails for decades.
