In scouring my little CD collection this week, I thought a reintroduction to a Classic Canadian Rock Band would be appropriate. One of my favourites from the time since I started listening to music is the group, Helix. This group has been around with us for more than thirty years, giving us feel good rock and roll at every turn. Helix had the most popularity during the eighties with consecutively released hit after hit album, or CD in today’s world.

One of my favourites from the time since I started listening to music is the group, Helix. This group has been around with us for more than thirty years, giving us feel good rock and roll at every turn. Helix had the most popularity during the eighties with consecutively released hit after hit album, or CD in today’s world.
In 1987, Helix released “Wild in the Streets”, via Capital Records and given to us by the classic line up of Brian Vollmer (vocals), Brent Doerner (guitar), the Late, Great Paul Hackman (guitar), Daryl Gray (bass) and Greg Hinz (drums). This recording is the closest they had ever come to giving us the “Live” feel these road warriors were so very known for.
From the title track, “Wild in the Streets” and on, you know as a music lover that you are in for a very high energy experience for your listening pleasure. What strikes this reviewer, is the amount of exceptional harmonies that are used, especially in “High Voltage Kicks”, “Shot Full of Love”, She’s Too Tough” and “Love Hungry Eyes”. The boys from Helix give us their gentler side with their beautiful, soft rendition of Nazareth’s “Dream On”. All highlights to this reviewer.
Though these songs, you can see the growth of the members in their songwriting and playing. Through it all, track by track, you can feel the fun that this band had putting this set of music together for us. That is what is most important here.
Of course with their reputation of being Canada’s hardest working band, Helix is still on the road and giving us new and old music to this day. I would recommend picking up this selection and any others they have recorded. You can find their store at www.planethelix.com
