Police officers are the worst breakers of the law; SERIOUSLY! Here is a short list of things I’ve seen officers do to break the law: run red lights, speed thru neighborhoods, put on sirens in order to not wait at red lights, jay walk, racial profiling, ignore cases that seem to tiny for their attention, etc….
WHY must we have the Police? You can name a few things like: to rid the world of predators, to stop drug trafficking, to keep old people safe and to reduce domestic violence. However, in Pemberton, New Jersey, a police officer was arrested for sexual assault and child abuse today; an officer in Boynton Beach, Florida, was fired and became a fugitive after being charged with drug trafficking last October; in 2006, 3 “under-cover” Atlanta officers fired off 39 shots at an elderly woman, killing her in her own home, as well as planting cocaine in her home after the fact.
Those are just a few instances of America’s GREAT police force in action, but to me Police officers only get in the way. Most police officers barely have an associates degree, which says to me that they haven’t been to a 4 year university amongst students of all ethnicities and backgrounds. Most police officers, especially the older ones, come in with only a high school diploma; really, how much do you know of the world we live in?
I once read that the police force or the patter-rollers were created in an effort to patrol the streets at night to catch slaves in negative situations such as: stealing food from the master or running away. With that being said, the police are here to protect someone, but it’s not those of us of color. Take a look around you! Police are using deadly force to handle an elderly BLACK woman, they’re killing black teens that could easily be taken down with a Taser and they’re allowing drugs to freely flow through the black neighborhoods. Black children and women go missing every day and No one can find a single one of them, but when we flip each of the examples listed above and make them about WHITE people, the story changes. A white child goes missing, they’re on every news channel; we NEVER hear about a white teen being gunned down by police officers and we also never hear about white cops getting off for hurting or killing another white person.
American society ceases to amaze me and I say this because: teachers must complete 3 semesters of practice teaching and 1 semester of interning at a certain grade level before they teach students; doctors must complete up to 10 years of school before they are allowed to prescribe medicines and diagnose patients; but a police officer only needs to attend an academy for LESS than a year before they are allowed to enforce the law, arrest citizens and/or hurt citizens in an effort to protect society. All 3 of those career fields will affect a person’s life, but only the officer can get in and out without ever having to practice beforehand with actual people.
I think that police officers must take mandatory Sociology classes before being able to patrol the streets; this way they will have a researched understanding of how people live and why they do the things they do. I also believe police officers must complete so many hours of community service, within the community they will patrol, before they are allowed to patrol that area. Police officers should be able to first FUNCTION in society before they are allowed to monitor and enforce the laws of society.
