Q: Are you represented by anyone?
A: Yes! Volpe Femina Model Management (Nor Cal)
Q: When did you first know that modeling was something that you wanted to do?
A: My mother would take me on go-sees as a child and I hated it, but as time passed and I was diagnosed with a genetic auto-immune deficiency disease, I knew it was something I needed to try again. To this day I own it and use it as a documented celebration of my life.
Q: Who inspired you to pursue a career in plus-modeling?
A: I have LOTS of fabulous people I look up to, but Daphne Sumner Ali is definitely one of them.
Q: Being that you’re pursuing a career in such a cut-throat industry, are you ever worried that you may NOT be able to break into the plus-modeling industry?
A: Not at all. Even if I don’t make it I know that I had fun trying to get there…besides I’m a superstar in my own mind so I’ll be fine.
Q: Do you think it’s important when pursuing a career in all types of modeling, to develop limits/boundaries that you will not cross?
A: Absolutely! Always follow your first mind, and stick to your guns when it comes to your level of comfort.
Q: Have you ever been asked to do something on a shoot, that you weren’t necessarily comfortable with?
A: I have yet to have that experience. I’ve done tons of different shoots from commercial, implied nudity, to actual nudity.
I have no problem saying “NO” if I’m not comfortable.
Q: What do you plan to achieve by becoming a plus-model?
A: Being a model is my dream job and would be a personal victory, but I would like to eventually become a person that is recognized for my work and my work ethic. The first “Octavia Mims” if you will.
Q: Pretend that I am someone that knows absolutely nothing about you, and walk me through a day with Octavia Mims, the plus-model.
-1st Octavia Mims is a mother and wife before anything, so breakfast and school is a must.
-2nd Check my day calendar for whatever project I have for that day.
-3rd Double check my “model bag” making sure that I have my make-up just in case.
-4th Make sure that I arrive at my shoots or events, in a timely manner.
-5th Home work and quality time with my family.
-6th Gym Time; Five days a week, at two-hours a day.
-In between all of this I am full time employee, working as a sterile processing technician.
Q: Do you think that it’s necessary to be represented by management/agency, when pursuing a career in plus-modeling?
A: Yes, it’s always great to have a team behind you that believes in you.
With a model management team they educate you and assist you in finding your means for exposure.
Q: What advice do you have for the thousands of other women, trying to break into the plus-modeling world?
A: Stay busy. And don’t take NO for an answer. This is a very shallow business so you need to develop a thick skin.
Q: What’s something that your fans do not know about you?
A: I am not only a model, but I am also an undercover singer!!
I love to sing but I just can’t bring myself to sing in front of other people.
Q: Do you have any up-coming projects/ventures that you would like to tell us about?
A: YES! I am currently in the works of building a plus-size promotional modeling team for “HuskyGirlSwagg” as well as our t-shirts are in the works.
